Traffic rules: Albania
- Right-hand traffic and standard European road rules.
- Speed limits: 40 km/h in urban areas, 80 km/h on rural roads, and 110 km/h on the A1 motorway.
- Low-beam headlights must be switched on at all times throughout the year, even in sunny weather. The fine ranges from €20 to €40.
- The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.01%, effectively meaning zero tolerance. Even one glass of wine may exceed the limit.
- Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers, including those in the rear seats.
- Mobile phones may only be used with a hands-free system.
- Children under 150 cm in height must travel in an appropriate child restraint system and may not sit in the front seat. Children under 3 years old must use a rear-facing child seat with the front airbag deactivated if installed in the front.
- There are no vignettes. The only toll road is the A1 motorway (Rruga e Kombit), with a single toll booth near the Kalimash Tunnel (towards Kosovo). The toll for a passenger car is approximately €5.
- Winter tires are not legally required. Snow chains may be used on fully snow-covered roads from November 1 to April 30.
- Radar detectors are prohibited. Traffic fines can be paid with a 50% discount if settled within 15 days.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Albania?
Drivers with licenses issued in the Latin alphabet (including EU/EEA and UK licenses) usually do not need an International Driving Permit. If your license is issued in Cyrillic, Arabic, or another non-Latin alphabet, an IDP is required.
What is the minimum age to rent a car?
Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old with at least one year of driving experience. Drivers under 25 usually pay a young driver surcharge. SUVs and premium cars often have higher minimum age requirements.
Is a security deposit required?
Yes. A standard security deposit is required. The amount depends on the vehicle category and insurance. With full coverage (SCDW), some rental companies reduce or waive the deposit. Exact conditions are shown when selecting a vehicle.
Where can I pick up and return the car?
The most common pickup location is Tirana International Airport (TIA). Cars are also available in Tirana, Durrës, Sarandë, Vlorë, and other cities. Hotel delivery may also be available.
Can I drive to neighboring countries?
Yes, but travel to Montenegro, North Macedonia, Kosovo, or Greece must be approved during booking. A Green Card insurance certificate is usually required.
Which insurance should I choose?
Basic insurance (CDW/TP) is included in the rental price, but the excess in case of an accident may reach €800–1,200. Full coverage (SCDW) is recommended, as mountain and coastal roads require extra care, and gravel roads can easily damage tires or the underside of the vehicle.
What is the fuel policy?
The standard policy is ‘full-to-full’: you receive the car with a full tank and return it with a full tank.
