Montenegro is a country best seen from behind the wheel: in a single morning you can drop from the snow line of Durmitor down to the warm Adriatic, then have dinner in Kotor’s old town beneath the fortress walls. Montenegro packs sharp contrasts into a small space: the Adriatic and Venetian-era towns by the water in the morning, hairpin bends above the Bay of Kotor by midday, and further north the Tara Canyon and the bare plateaus of Durmitor. Distances are short but the roads twist, and without a car half the country stays out of reach — buses rarely run to Skadar Lake, the mountain villages or the viewpoints above the bay.

From the UK there are direct seasonal flights: easyJet, British Airways, Ryanair, Jet2 and Wizz Air fly from London (Gatwick, Stansted, Heathrow), Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham and Bristol, mostly into Tivat over the summer. Tivat (TIV) sits right on the Bay of Kotor and suits the coast and the Budva Riviera; Podgorica (TGD) runs year-round and is the better base for the mountains, the north and the lake. Paying for your rental

Montenegro uses the euro. Pay in euros rather than your converted home currency: if a card terminal or ATM offers to charge you in pounds, dollars or similar (dynamic currency conversion), decline it — the rate is usually worse. Many local suppliers now accept debit cards as well, especially on no-deposit deals.

Seasons and what to plan

Summer on the coast is peak: through July and August cars in Tivat go fast, so booking early genuinely saves both money and hassle. The Budva Riviera beaches, Sveti Stefan, evening runs into Kotor — all of it is easier with your own car. Spring and autumn are the best time for canyons and national parks: the heat eases, the hairpins empty out, and the views in the shoulder seasons are at their finest. In winter the focus shifts north, to Žabljak and the slopes of Durmitor; there you’ll need winter tyres, and chains are carried on the mountain stretches.

Which car class to choose

For the coast and towns a compact is plenty — it’s easier to park in the tight lanes of Kotor and Budva and to pass on narrow coastal roads. For Durmitor, the gravel tracks to the canyons and the mountain villages, pick something with more ground clearance; a crossover helps. One thing to plan around if you normally drive an automatic: automatics are scarce in Montenegro, and most of the fleet is manual — worse in peak season. If you can only drive an automatic, book early and budget for a surcharge.

What rental costs

The price comes down to a few things: season, car class, length of rental and whether full coverage is included. It’s cheapest off-season and on rentals of a week or more, when the daily rate drops noticeably. July and August go the other way — dearer, with a thinner choice at the airport. Deposits at local companies are usually low, and part of the fleet is available with none at all; you’ll see the exact amounts as you pick the car.

Good to know on the ground

Parking in the old towns is a subject in itself: the historic centres of Kotor and Budva are pedestrianised, so the car goes on paid lots outside the walls, and those fill by midday in summer. Arriving early pays off. On the Podgorica–Bar run the Sozina tunnel is handy, cutting the drive down noticeably; it’s a toll road. The mountain hairpins above the bay call for a calm pace. If you plan to cross into Croatia, Bosnia, Albania or Serbia, sort out a Green Card in advance — the supplier issues it at booking.
