About the city

Podgorica sits on the Zeta plain where the Morača and Ribnica rivers meet — it’s the capital and the country’s main administrative and transport hub. There are fewer postcard views here than on the coast, but every major road in Montenegro converges on Podgorica.

Podgorica Airport (TGD) lies about 11–12 km south of the centre, a 15–20 minute drive, with rental desks right in the arrivals hall. From the UK there are direct flights with Wizz Air (London Luton and Gatwick) and Ryanair (London Stansted), with a flight time of roughly 2 hours 45 minutes; other cities are served seasonally or via connections. TGD’s advantages are year-round connections and rental rates that are often lower than Tivat’s in peak season.

Why rent a car here

Public transport in Montenegro is sparse: to Skadar Lake, Ostrog, the canyons or Durmitor, buses either don’t run or drop you a few kilometres short at the foot of the mountain. A car solves that completely — from Podgorica the country opens up radially, and almost every point is reachable as a day trip.

Local suppliers also tend to be flexible on the things that trip travellers up abroad: many don’t require a credit card with a large hold, deposits are often low or waived on many cars, and everything is billed in euro. Seasons and what to plan

Spring (April–June). Comfortable temperatures, a green plain, full rivers and waterfalls. Ideal for Skadar Lake, Ostrog and the canyons. In early spring the higher ground (Durmitor) can still hold snow — check the state of the passes before you set off.

Summer (July–August). Podgorica is one of Europe’s hottest capitals, with daytime highs that can reach +35 to +40 °C. The move is to head for altitude — Kolašin and Žabljak stay cool and offer trails — while Bar and Ulcinj are the easier drives to the sea. This is peak season, with the highest prices and the tightest availability, so book ahead.

Autumn (September–October). The golden window: the heat eases, crowds thin, and rates drop. Good for the lake, the wine villages around Skadar, and unhurried drives across the plain.

Winter (December–March). The lowest rental rates of the year. Kolašin runs as a ski resort, while the coast is quiet and empty. Winter tyres are mandatory from 15 November to 1 April, with chains required on mountain routes.

Choosing a car class

For the city and main roads, a compact hatchback or saloon is plenty — economical and easy on narrow rural lanes. A modern motorway runs to Kolašin, where any class is comfortable. For mountain stretches and the approaches to Ostrog and Durmitor, an SUV with a little more ground clearance is more pleasant, though the surface there is mostly paved. An automatic usually carries a surcharge and lower availability — manuals are cheaper and more common. Air conditioning is essential in summer, not optional.

How much car rental costs in Podgorica

Price depends heavily on the season. In the low season (winter, late autumn) economy cars start from around €10–15 per day, while in peak season (July–August) the average economy rate rises to €35–45 and above per day. Additional facts, parking, payment and rules

• Parking. The centre has paid zones: green ≈ €0.40/hr, yellow ≈ €0.50/hr, red ≈ €0.60/hr. There are free spaces on the outskirts and in courtyards. Pay by meter, app or SMS.
• Payment and DCC. Montenegro uses the euro. When paying by card or withdrawing at an ATM, choose to be charged in euro rather than your home currency (GBP, USD, AUD). Home-currency conversion (DCC) usually applies a poorer exchange rate than your own bank or a service like Revolut/Wise.
• Rules of the road. Right-hand traffic and standard European rules. Dipped headlights stay on day and night, year-round.
• Alcohol — limit of 0.03%; a zero limit applies to new drivers. Seatbelts are compulsory for everyone, and phones only via hands-free.
• Tolls. Montenegro has no vignette. On the way to the coast, the Sozina tunnel is the only toll section — about €2.50 for a car.
• Deposit. Local suppliers usually ask for a low deposit, and many cars are available with no deposit at all; debit cards are generally accepted.
