Traffic rules: Greece

  • Drive on the right-hand side of the road under standard European traffic rules.
  • Speed limits: 50 km/h in urban areas, 90 km/h on rural roads, up to 110 km/h on expressways, and 130 km/h on motorways.
  • Legal blood alcohol limit: 0.05%; for drivers with less than 2 years of experience and professional drivers, 0.02%.
  • Seat belts are mandatory for all occupants, including rear-seat passengers.
  • Mobile phones may only be used with a hands-free system.
  • There are no vignettes. Motorways use section-based tolls (“diodia”), payable in cash or with an e-pass transponder.
  • Since January 1, 2026, the speed limit on urban streets with one lane in each direction has been reduced to 30 km/h.
  • Radar detectors and signal jammers are prohibited. Fines can reach €2,000, and driving privileges may be suspended. Traffic fines are paid at a bank or post office, not to the police officer.

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to rent a car in Greece?

EU driving licences are accepted without additional documents. If your licence was issued outside the EU or is written in Cyrillic, you must also present an International Driving Permit (IDP).

What is the minimum age to rent a car?

The legal driving age is 18, but most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old with a minimum of one year of driving experience. Drivers under 25 usually pay a young driver surcharge.

Is a security deposit required?

In most cases, a security deposit equal to the insurance excess is blocked on the driver’s credit card. Some local rental companies offer low-deposit or no-deposit rentals. The exact conditions are shown when selecting a specific vehicle.

Where can I pick up and return the car?

The most common locations are Athens, Thessaloniki, and Heraklion airports, as well as Rhodes, Corfu, and Crete. Pick-up in cities and hotel delivery are also available.

Can I drive to neighboring countries?

Travel to Albania, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, or Turkey must be approved when booking, and a Green Card insurance certificate may be required. Many rental companies restrict cross-border travel, so check the policy in advance.

Which insurance should I choose?

Basic insurance is included in the rental price. You can upgrade to Full CDW with zero excess, which covers minor damage without additional charges.

What is the fuel policy?

The standard policy is “full-to-full”: you receive the car with a full tank and return it with a full tank.

When is the best time to book?

Demand is very high in July and August, especially on the islands and at airports, so booking well in advance is recommended during the peak season.
