Traffic rules: Cyprus
- Left-hand traffic (a legacy of British rule), right-hand-drive vehicles, and overtaking on the right.
- Speed limits: 50 km/h in urban areas, 80 km/h on rural roads, and up to 100 km/h on motorways. The minimum speed on motorways is 65 km/h.
- The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.05%. For drivers with less than three years of driving experience and motorcyclists, the limit is 0.02%.
- Seat belts are mandatory for all occupants. Children under 150 cm must use an appropriate child restraint system, and children under 5 years old may not travel in the front seat.
- Mobile phones may only be used with a hands-free system. Eating and drinking while driving are prohibited.
- Headlights must be switched on from half an hour before sunset until half an hour after sunrise. They are not required during daylight hours.
- There are no vignettes or toll roads. Motorways are free of charge.
- Roundabouts operate clockwise. Priority is given to vehicles already on the roundabout approaching from the right.
- Rental cars may not be driven into the northern (Turkish-controlled) part of Cyprus, as rental insurance is not valid there.
- Cyprus uses a penalty points system. Accumulating 12 penalty points may result in court proceedings and suspension of your driving license. Traffic fines must be paid online or through a bank, not directly to police officers.
