Ten minutes from the arrivals hall to the palm-lined Finikoudes promenade — Larnaca is one of the few Mediterranean airports that drops you this close to the sea, right beside a salt lake where pink flamingos gather in winter. It’s the main gateway to Cyprus and a natural base for the whole island: the beaches around Ayia Napa, the mountain villages of the Troodos, the lace towns inland. About the city

Larnaca is Cyprus’s third-largest city and its main air hub — most flights to the island land here. The airport (LCA) sits on the southern edge of town, right by the Salt Lake, so the drive into the centre takes only a few minutes. The city itself is calmer than busy Ayia Napa: a long palm-lined seafront, a 14th-century fort, the church of Saint Lazarus, and Mackenzie beach almost under the runway. Thanks to its central position on the south coast, Larnaca is often used as a base for trips across the whole island.

Seasons and what to plan

Summer (June–September) is beach season and peak demand: Mackenzie and Finikoudes fill up, cars at the airport go quickly, so book ahead. For the eastern beaches — Ayia Napa and Protaras — it’s best to leave Larnaca early, while the roads are still empty. Spring is mild and green: hillsides in flower, water still standing on the Salt Lake with the flamingos in residence, and the Troodos switchbacks a pleasure to drive. Autumn keeps the sea warm into November with fewer crowds — good for wine villages and unhurried drives. Winter on the coast is mild, with no snow but the largest flamingo numbers on the lake; up in the Troodos, though, you can find snow and even skiing. Winter tyres are not required in Cyprus, even in the colder months.

Which car class to choose

For the city and coast, a compact or economy car is plenty — Larnaca has narrow old-town lanes and limited parking near the seafront, and a small car is easier to slot in. If the Troodos and mountain villages are on your list, choose something with a bit more power and ground clearance: the roads are winding and steep, though four-wheel drive usually isn’t necessary. Air conditioning is essential in summer. One more note: in Cyprus the steering wheel is on the right and traffic keeps left. If you normally drive on the right, an automatic makes the first few days easier than a manual — and since automatics are less common here and go quickly, it’s worth booking one early.

The price depends on season, class and length of rental. Economy and mini cars are usually cheapest outside summer and on longer bookings; in summer, rates for the same models run noticeably higher, and the closer to your date, the fewer cars are left at the airport. In Cyprus traffic keeps to the left and the steering wheel is on the right — familiar if you’re from the UK, Ireland, Australia or South Africa, and a short adjustment otherwise; at a roundabout, give way to traffic already on it. There are no tolls or vignettes on the island, and the motorways are free. On payment: Cyprus uses the euro, so when paying by card, choose to be charged in EUR rather than your home currency — the terminal’s own conversion (DCC) is usually a worse rate. Parking in central Larnaca is paid along the seafront and old town (marked bays and meters), with free street parking further from the sea. Drink-driving is effectively off the table: the limit is low, checks are frequent and fines are steep.
