Traffic rules: Argentina
- Drive on the right. Traffic regulations are governed by the National Traffic Law (Ley 24.449 and subsequent amendments).
- Speed limits: 40 km/h in urban areas (up to 60 km/h on wide avenues), 110 km/h on rural roads, 120 km/h on expressways (semiautopistas), and 130 km/h on motorways.
- Low beam headlights are mandatory at all times on national and intercity roads.
- The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.00% on federal roads. Some provinces have historically allowed up to 0.05%, but a zero-alcohol policy is the safest approach.
- Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers.
- Mobile phones may only be used with a hands-free system.
- Children under 12 must travel in the rear seats. Children aged 5–12 or under 1.35 m in height must use a booster seat.
- Left turns on multi-lane roads are only permitted when indicated by a green traffic light arrow.
- There is no vignette system. Toll plazas (peajes) are common around Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and Rosario. Rental cars usually do not have electronic toll tags, so carry cash.
- During winter (June to August), snow chains may be required on mountain passes in Patagonia and the Andes.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Argentina?
If your driving licence is issued in Cyrillic or another non-Latin script, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is mandatory. You must carry both your original licence and the IDP.
What is the minimum age for renting a car?
Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old with a minimum of two years of driving experience. Drivers under 25 usually pay a young driver surcharge.
Is a security deposit required?
Yes. A security deposit is blocked on the driver’s credit card. The amount depends on the rental company and vehicle category. Most companies do not accept debit or prepaid cards.
Where can I pick up and return the car?
Rental desks are available at Buenos Aires airports (Ezeiza and Jorge Newbery), Mendoza, Bariloche, Córdoba, El Calafate, and Ushuaia airports, as well as in major city centres. Hotel delivery is available from some companies.
Can I drive outside Argentina?
Travel to Chile is the most common cross-border option and must be arranged in advance. Some rental companies also allow travel to Uruguay and Brazil (Iguazu Falls region) on request. Most companies do not permit travel to Bolivia or Paraguay.
Which insurance should I choose?
Basic CDW/TP insurance is included but comes with an excess. Full coverage with zero excess is recommended for driving on gravel roads in Patagonia and remote regions.
What is the fuel policy?
The standard policy is full-to-full. Most petrol stations in Argentina are full-service, so attendants refuel the vehicle for you.
When should I book?
Patagonia’s high season runs from December to March, when cars in Bariloche, El Calafate, and Ushuaia sell out quickly. In Mendoza, Córdoba, and Buenos Aires, cars are available year-round, but book early for public holidays and long weekends.
