Traffic rules: France
- Drive on the right and follow standard European traffic rules.
- Speed limits: 50 km/h in urban areas, 80 km/h on rural roads (90 km/h in some departments), up to 110 km/h on dual carriageways, and 130 km/h on motorways (autoroutes).
- In rain or poor visibility, speed limits are reduced to 110 km/h on motorways, 100 km/h on dual carriageways, and 80 km/h on other roads.
- The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.05%. For drivers with less than three years of driving experience, the limit is 0.02%.
- Seat belts are mandatory for all occupants. Children under 10 must travel in an approved child restraint.
- Mobile phones may only be used with a hands-free system. Holding a phone while driving is prohibited.
- At unsigned intersections, the “priority to the right” (priorité à droite) rule applies.
- There is no vignette system. Most motorways are tolled, and many cities require a Crit’Air environmental sticker for entry into Low Emission Zones (ZFE).
- From 1 November to 31 March, winter tyres or snow chains are mandatory in designated mountain departments under the Loi Montagne regulations.
- A reflective safety vest and warning triangle are mandatory equipment in every vehicle.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in France?
If your driving licence is issued in the Latin alphabet, your national licence and passport are usually sufficient. If your licence uses Cyrillic or another non-Latin script, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is required.
What is the minimum age for renting a car?
Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old with one year of driving experience. Drivers under 25 usually pay a young driver surcharge of around €10–30 per day.
Is a security deposit required, and what type of card do I need?
Yes. The deposit is normally blocked on a credit card in the driver’s name. Debit cards are rarely accepted for deposits in France.
Where can I pick up and return the car?
The most common locations are Paris, Nice, Lyon, and Marseille airports, as well as city centres and railway stations. One-way rentals are often available for an additional fee.
Can I drive to neighbouring countries?
Yes. Cross-border travel to Spain, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, and other neighbouring countries must usually be approved during booking. Switzerland requires a motorway vignette.
Are motorways in France tolled?
Yes. Most autoroutes are toll roads with payment by cash or card at péage toll stations. Free national roads are available but usually take longer.
What is the Crit'Air sticker?
Crit’Air is an environmental sticker required for entering Low Emission Zones (ZFE) in cities such as Paris, Lyon, and Marseille. Most rental vehicles already have one, but you should confirm this when collecting your car.
Are winter tyres required?
In most of France they are not mandatory. However, from 1 November to 31 March, winter tyres or snow chains are legally required in designated mountain departments under the Loi Montagne regulations.
