Traffic rules: Oman
- Right-hand traffic. Road signs are displayed in both Arabic and English.
- Speed limits: 60 km/h in urban areas, 100 km/h on rural roads, and 120 km/h on motorways. Speed cameras operate throughout the country and automatically record violations.
- Zero alcohol tolerance: the legal blood alcohol limit is 0.00%. Any amount of alcohol while driving may result in arrest and deportation. Oman strictly follows Islamic law.
- Seat belts are mandatory for all occupants, including rear-seat passengers. Children under 4 years old must travel in a child seat in the rear. Children under 12 years old should not travel in the front seat.
- Mobile phones may only be used with a hands-free system. Using a handheld phone while driving is subject to a fine.
- There are no vignettes. Toll roads are practically nonexistent. Speed camera fines are automatically assigned to the vehicle.
- Winter tires are not required.
- Traffic fines cannot be paid directly to police officers. Payment must be made online through the Royal Oman Police website or at a police station. Radar detectors are prohibited.
- Drive carefully on mountain roads and through wadis (dry riverbeds), as flash floods can occur quickly during the rainy season. Camels and goats are common hazards on rural roads.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Oman?
If your driver’s license is issued in the Latin alphabet (for example, European or US licenses), most rental companies accept it. If your license is issued in Cyrillic or another non-Latin alphabet, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is required. It is recommended to obtain an IDP before traveling, as some rental companies require it in all cases.
What is the minimum age to rent a car?
The minimum age is usually 21 years, although some rental companies only rent vehicles to drivers aged 25 and older. Drivers under 25 may be charged a young driver surcharge.
Is a security deposit required?
Yes. A deposit is required and is typically from 150 OMR (approximately USD 390). It is blocked on the driver’s credit card. Debit cards are not accepted by all rental companies.
Where can I pick up and return the car?
The most common pickup locations are Muscat International Airport (MCT), Salalah Airport (SLL), and city rental offices. Many companies also offer hotel delivery.
Can I drive a rental car outside Oman?
Cross-border travel is generally allowed only to the United Arab Emirates with prior approval from the rental company. Additional insurance and authorization are required. Travel to Yemen is not permitted.
Which insurance should I choose?
Basic CDW insurance is usually included in the rental price. Full CDW coverage is strongly recommended, especially if you plan to drive on mountain roads, through wadis, or in the desert.
Do I need a four-wheel-drive vehicle?
A 4×4 vehicle is mandatory for trips to the Wahiba Sands, Jebel Shams, and some mountain routes. Standard cars are sufficient for cities and major highways.
When is the best time to book?
Demand is highest between October and March, as well as during the Khareef season in Salalah (July–August). Book early, especially if you need a 4×4 vehicle.
