Traffic rules: Seychelles
- Drive on the left. Vehicles have right-hand drive, and overtaking is on the right. Drivers used to right-hand traffic are strongly advised to choose an automatic transmission.
- Speed limits: 40 km/h in urban areas, 65 km/h on open roads, and up to 80 km/h on the Victoria–Airport road on Mahé. There are no motorways.
- The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08%. Violations may result in fines of up to 18,000 SCR, licence suspension, or imprisonment.
- Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers.
- Mobile phones may only be used with a hands-free system.
- There are no toll roads or vignettes. Paid parking is available in Victoria, with parking tickets sold at post offices.
- Roads are narrow and winding. On mountain roads on Mahé and Praslin, uphill traffic has priority—give way at passing places.
- On La Digue, the speed limit is 25 km/h, and car rental is almost unavailable.
- During the rainy season (November to March), mountain roads become slippery. Reduce your speed accordingly.
- Traffic fines must be paid at a police station, not directly to the officer.
- There are only two petrol stations on Praslin, so keep an eye on your fuel level and refuel in advance.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Seychelles?
If your driving licence is issued in the Latin alphabet, your national licence and passport are sufficient for stays of up to three months. If your licence uses Cyrillic or another non-Latin script, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is required.
What is the minimum age for renting a car?
Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old with a minimum of two years of driving experience. Drivers under 25 may have to pay a young driver surcharge.
Is a security deposit required?
Many cars on the platform are available without a deposit. If a deposit is required, it is usually no more than a few hundred dollars. The exact amount is shown on the vehicle page.
Where can I pick up and return the car?
On Mahé, cars are available at SEZ Airport, Victoria, and Beau Vallon. On Praslin, pick-up is available near the airport or Baie Sainte Anne port. Many rental companies also offer hotel delivery.
Is it difficult to drive on the left?
Most drivers adapt within a few hours. Choosing an automatic transmission makes the transition much easier. Roads are narrow and speeds are low, making driving manageable.
Which insurance should I choose?
Basic CDW/TP insurance is included. Full coverage with zero excess is recommended for driving on the winding roads of Mahé and Praslin.
What is the fuel policy?
Most rentals follow a full-to-full policy. There are only two petrol stations on Praslin, so refuel whenever you have the opportunity.
When should I book?
Demand is highest in January, February, and July. Cars at SEZ Airport sell out quickly, so book in advance. Prices are typically around 20% lower in May and June, when the islands are less crowded.
