Questions

Frequently asked questions about car rental in Vietnam

License, deposit, border crossing, driver age and toll roads.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Vietnam?

Yes. Foreign drivers must carry both their national driving licence and an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention. IDPs issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention are not recognised in Vietnam.

What is the minimum age for renting a car?

Most rental companies require drivers to be between 20 and 21 years old with at least one year of driving experience. The widest choice of vehicles is usually available from age 23, while drivers under 30 may face higher deposits or additional fees.

Is a security deposit required?

Yes. Deposits are generally required and often range from USD 200 to 500 or represent a percentage of the rental value. Exact conditions are shown when selecting a vehicle.

Can I rent a car with a driver?

Yes. Chauffeur-driven rentals are common and are a popular option for travelling between cities or resorts because local traffic can be challenging.

Where can I pick up and return the car?

Cars are commonly available at airports and city locations in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Nha Trang, and Hoi An. Hotel delivery is often available.

Can I drive to neighbouring countries?

Usually not. Travel to Cambodia or Laos is generally possible only with a driver and special permits arranged in advance.

What is the fuel policy and alcohol rule?

The standard fuel policy is full-to-full. Vietnam has a zero-tolerance alcohol policy, so you must not consume alcohol before driving.

When should I book?

Cars are in high demand during holidays and peak travel seasons. Book early and consider regional rainy seasons when planning your itinerary.
