Traffic rules: Armenia
- Right-hand traffic and standard road rules.
- Speed limits: 60 km/h in urban areas, 90 km/h on rural roads, and 110 km/h on motorways.
- Low-beam headlights are required at night and in poor visibility; they are not mandatory during the day in clear weather.
- The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.00%; Armenia has a zero-tolerance policy, so it is best not to drink before driving.
- Seat belts are mandatory for front-seat occupants; their use is recommended for rear-seat passengers.
- Mobile phones may only be used with a hands-free system.
- Children under 12 years old may not travel in the front seat.
- There are no vignettes and no toll roads. Since 2018, the road tax for foreign vehicles has been abolished.
- Winter tires are mandatory from November 15 to March 31. Snow chains may be required on mountain roads.
- There are many automatic speed cameras, especially in Yerevan and at the entrances to towns and villages. Speed limits change when entering populated areas, so pay close attention to road signs.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Armenia?
Citizens of Russia and most CIS countries can usually use their national driver’s licenses issued in Cyrillic. If your driver’s license is issued in the Latin alphabet, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is formally required and recommended.
What is the minimum age to rent a car?
Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old with a minimum of two years of driving experience. Some companies require drivers to be at least 22 or 23 years old, depending on the vehicle.
Is a security deposit required?
Many local rental companies allow rentals without a credit card. The deposit can often be paid in cash or by debit card. A typical deposit starts from around USD 200. Exact conditions are shown on the vehicle page.
Where can I pick up and return the car?
The most common pickup locations are Zvartnots International Airport (EVN) and central Yerevan. Hotel delivery is available from many companies as a paid option.
Can I drive a rental car into Georgia?
Yes, with prior approval during booking. You will need permission from the rental company and additional insurance. Travel to Azerbaijan and Turkey is not possible because the land borders are closed.
Which insurance should I choose?
Basic insurance is included in the rental price. Extended CDW coverage with zero excess is recommended, especially if you plan to drive on mountain or gravel roads.
What is the fuel policy?
The standard policy is ‘full-to-full’: you receive the car with a full tank and return it with a full tank. Fuel stations are common in major cities, but in mountainous regions it is advisable to refuel in advance.
When is the best time to book?
Demand is highest from July to September. During the high season, cars at Zvartnots Airport are booked quickly, so reserve in advance. Prices are usually lowest from January to April.
