Traffic rules: Georgia
- Right-hand traffic and standard European road rules.
- Speed limits: 60 km/h in urban areas, 90 km/h on rural roads, and 110 km/h on motorways.
- Low-beam headlights must be used at night, in tunnels, and in poor visibility. Daytime running lights are not mandatory.
- The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.03%. The fine for a first offense starts from 700 GEL, with possible license suspension for up to six months.
- Seat belts are mandatory for the driver and front-seat passenger. Their use by rear-seat passengers is also recommended.
- Mobile phones may only be used with a hands-free system.
- Children under 12 years old must travel in an appropriate child restraint system.
- There are no vignettes. Paid parking in Tbilisi, Batumi, and Kutaisi is available through city parking apps.
- From December 1 to March 1, winter tires are mandatory on mountain and high-altitude roads, including the Rikoti Pass, the road to Stepantsminda (Kazbegi), and several other routes. Vehicles with summer tires are not allowed. Winter tires are not required in cities but are recommended.
- Traffic fines can be paid through TBC Pay or BOG Pay terminals, or online at video.police.ge within 30 days. Late payment doubles the fine.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Georgia?
If your driver’s license is issued in the Latin alphabet or in Russian, your national driver’s license is sufficient. If it is issued in another alphabet, an International Driving Permit (IDP) or a notarized translation is required.
What is the minimum age to rent a car?
Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old with a minimum of two years of driving experience. Some companies rent to drivers from 18 years old, but this is uncommon.

Yes, travel to Armenia and Turkey is usually possible with prior approval during booking, often with an additional fee and authorization documents. Travel to Azerbaijan is less common and more restricted. Driving into Russia or Abkhazia is prohibited by all rental companies.
