Traffic rules: Egypt
- Drive on the right. Road signs follow international standards and are also displayed in Arabic.
- Speed limits: 60 km/h in urban areas, 90 km/h on rural roads, and up to 100 km/h on major desert highways such as Cairo–Alexandria and Cairo–Suez.
- Daytime headlights are not mandatory. Many local drivers also drive without headlights at night, so night driving is not recommended.
- The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.05%, although police generally apply a zero-tolerance approach. Violations may result in heavy fines, licence suspension, or imprisonment.
- Seat belts are mandatory for the driver and front-seat passenger.
- Mobile phones may only be used with a hands-free system.
- Children under 2 must travel in a child seat in the rear. Children under 7 may not travel in the front passenger seat.
- There is no vignette system. Major toll roads include the Cairo–Alexandria Highway and sections of Cairo’s ring roads. Tolls are paid in Egyptian pounds (EGP).
- Winter tyres are not required due to Egypt’s desert climate.
- Radar detectors and devices interfering with speed cameras are prohibited. Speed cameras are common on highways.
- Unmarked speed bumps at the entrances to towns are common and are a frequent cause of damage to rental cars.
- In the event of an accident, call the traffic police immediately. Without an official police report, insurance coverage may be considered invalid.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Egypt?
Yes. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is mandatory for all foreign drivers. Egyptian law requires you to present both your national driving licence and an IDP. The IDP must be obtained before travelling to Egypt.
What is the minimum age for renting a car?
Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old with one year of driving experience. Drivers under 25 are often charged a young driver fee.
Is a security deposit required?
Yes, although the amount depends on the rental company and vehicle category. Through aggregators, deposits may range from zero to around €300, while some local companies require several hundred US dollars. Exact conditions are shown for each vehicle.
Where can I pick up and return the car?
The most common locations are Cairo (CAI), Hurghada (HRG), and Sharm El Sheikh (SSH) airports. Hotel delivery is often available in resort areas.
Can I drive to neighbouring countries?
No. Rental cars may only be used within Egypt. Travel to Libya, Sudan, or Israel is not permitted and is not covered by insurance.
Which insurance should I choose?
Basic CDW insurance is included. Full CDW with zero excess is highly recommended, especially for driving in Cairo traffic and on desert highways, where minor collisions are relatively common.
What is the fuel policy?
The standard policy is full-to-full: collect the car with a full tank and return it full.
When should I book?
The peak tourist season runs from October to March, when prices are typically 20–30% higher and popular vehicles sell out quickly. Summer (June to August) is cheaper but temperatures often exceed +40°C.
