Frequently asked questions about car rental in Morocco
License, deposit, border crossing, driver age and toll roads.
Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Morocco?
Yes. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is required for all foreign drivers, regardless of the issuing country or the alphabet used on the licence. Most rental companies will not release a vehicle without an IDP.
What is the minimum age for renting a car?
Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old with a minimum of one year of driving experience. Drivers under 25 are often charged a young driver fee.
Is a security deposit required?
Yes. A deposit is blocked on the driver’s bank card. The amount depends on the rental company and vehicle category and is shown during booking.
Where can I pick up and return the car?
Cars are available at Marrakech, Casablanca, Agadir, Fes, and Tangier airports, as well as city-centre rental offices. Hotel delivery may also be available.
Can I drive to neighbouring countries?
No. The border with Algeria has been closed since 1994, and Western Sahara is a disputed territory where rental cars are generally not permitted. Cross-border travel is not allowed.
Which insurance should I choose?
Basic CDW insurance is included. We recommend Full CDW with zero excess, as it offers greater peace of mind on Morocco’s roads and during frequent police checks.
What is the fuel policy?
The standard policy is full-to-full: collect the car with a full tank and return it full.
When should I book?
Rental cars at Marrakech and Agadir airports are in high demand during March–April and July–August. Book 2–4 weeks in advance, especially for Christmas, New Year, and Easter holidays.
