Questions

Frequently asked questions about car rental in Fiji

License, deposit, border crossing, driver age and toll roads.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Fiji?

If your driver’s license is issued in the Latin alphabet (for example, UK, US, or EU licenses), your national driver’s license and passport are usually sufficient. If it is issued in Cyrillic, you will need an International Driving Permit (IDP).

What is the minimum age to rent a car?

Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old. Drivers under 25 may have to pay a young driver surcharge, and some companies require at least 2 years of driving experience.

Is a security deposit required?

Yes. A security deposit is usually blocked on the driver’s credit card. The exact amount is shown when selecting a specific vehicle.

Where can I pick up and return the car?

The most common pickup locations are Nadi International Airport and Nausori Airport (Suva), as well as Denarau, Lautoka, and Sigatoka. Hotel delivery is often available.

Can I drive between the islands?

Most roads are located on Viti Levu. Rental cars can sometimes be transported by ferry to Vanua Levu or Taveuni, but this must be approved by the rental company in advance.

Which insurance should I choose?

Basic insurance is included in the rental price. You can add Full CDW with zero excess, which is especially recommended if you plan to drive on gravel or mountain roads.

What is the fuel policy?

The standard policy is “full-to-full”: you receive the car with a full tank and return it with a full tank. Fuel stations in remote areas often accept cash only.

When is the best time to book?

The peak travel season is the dry season (May to October), when rental cars at Nadi Airport are booked quickly. From November to April, heavy rain and cyclone season may affect travel plans, so booking in advance is recommended.
