Traffic rules: Germany
- Drive on the right and follow standard European traffic rules.
- Speed limits: 50 km/h in urban areas and 100 km/h on rural roads. Most sections of the Autobahn have no general speed limit, although the recommended speed is 130 km/h. Where speed limit signs are displayed, they are legally binding.
- The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.05%. Drivers under 21 or with less than two years of driving experience must have a blood alcohol level of 0.00%.
- Seat belts are mandatory for all occupants.
- Mobile phones may only be used with a hands-free system. Using a phone while stopped in traffic is also an offence.
- Passenger cars do not require a vignette. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes use the Toll Collect system.
- Winter tyres are mandatory whenever winter road conditions apply (snow, ice, frost, or slush). Since October 2024, only tyres marked with the Alpine symbol (❄) are accepted. Fines start from €60.
- On the Autobahn, overtaking on the right is prohibited. Drivers must keep to the right except when overtaking (Rechtsfahrgebot). During traffic jams, an emergency corridor (Rettungsgasse) must be formed between the leftmost lane and the adjacent lane. Fines start from €200.
- Low beam headlights are required only in poor visibility such as rain, snow, or fog. Most rental cars have automatic headlights.
- Studded tyres are prohibited.
- A first aid kit and warning triangle are mandatory. A reflective safety vest is strongly recommended.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Germany?
If your driving licence is issued in the Latin alphabet, your national licence and passport are usually sufficient. Licences issued in Cyrillic, Arabic, Chinese, or other non-Latin scripts require an International Driving Permit (IDP).
What is the minimum age for renting a car?
Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old with one year of driving experience. Some companies rent to drivers from 18 years old but apply a young driver surcharge. Drivers under 25 usually pay an additional fee.
Is a security deposit required?
Yes. A deposit of approximately €200–500 is usually blocked on the driver’s credit card. Many rental companies do not accept debit cards, so check the conditions before booking.
Where can I pick up and return the car?
Rental desks are available at major airports, including Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin Brandenburg, Hamburg, Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Stuttgart, as well as in most major city centres.
