Traffic rules: Poland
- Right-hand traffic with standard European road rules.
- Speed limits: 50 km/h in urban areas, 90 km/h on rural roads, 120 km/h on expressways (S roads), and 140 km/h on motorways (A roads).
- Low-beam headlights are mandatory at all times throughout the year. During daylight hours and in good visibility, daytime running lights may be used instead.
- The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.2‰, one of the strictest in Europe. For drivers with less than two years of experience, the limit is 0.0‰. At levels above 1.5‰, the vehicle may be confiscated.
- Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers.
- Mobile phones may only be used with a hands-free system.
- Children under 12 years old or shorter than 150 cm must use an appropriate child restraint.
- There is no vignette system. Some sections of the A1, A2, and A4 motorways are tolled and can be paid for with cash, card, or via a mobile app.
- Winter tires are not legally required but are strongly recommended when temperatures fall below +7°C. Studded tires are prohibited.
- Radar detectors are prohibited. Foreign drivers usually pay traffic fines on the spot in cash or through the official payment system.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Poland?
Poland accepts driving licences issued by EU and EEA countries without an IDP. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet (for example, Cyrillic or Chinese characters), an International Driving Permit (IDP) is required. Bring your original licence together with the IDP.
What is the minimum age to rent a car?
Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old with at least one year of driving experience. Drivers under 25 usually pay a small young driver surcharge.
Is a security deposit required?
Yes. The deposit is blocked on the driver’s bank card when collecting the vehicle. The amount depends on the car category and rental company. Exact conditions are shown when selecting a specific vehicle.
Where can I pick up and return the car?
Cars are commonly available at Warsaw (Chopin and Modlin), Kraków, Gdańsk, Wrocław, and Poznań airports, as well as in city centres. Hotel delivery may also be available.
Can I drive to neighbouring countries?
Travel to Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Lithuania is usually allowed with prior approval during booking. Most rental companies do not allow travel to Belarus, Ukraine, or Russia. Check the conditions before your trip.
Which insurance should I choose?
Basic insurance is included in the rental price. You can add Full CDW with zero excess to avoid paying for minor damage when returning the vehicle.
What is the fuel policy?
The standard policy is full-to-full: you receive the car with a full tank and return it with a full tank. Refuelling before return is required.
When is the best time to book?
Demand is highest during summer (July–August) and the Christmas holidays, especially in Kraków and Warsaw. Book 2–3 weeks in advance, or even earlier during peak season.
