Traffic rules: Uzbekistan
- Right-hand traffic and standard European road rules.
- Speed limits: 60 km/h in Tashkent, Nukus, and regional and district administrative centers, 70 km/h in other built-up areas, 100 km/h outside built-up areas, and up to 110 km/h on motorways.
- Low-beam headlights or daytime running lights (DRL) must be switched on at all times, including during the day.
- The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.00‰: only completely sober driving is permitted.
- Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers.
- Mobile phones may only be used with a hands-free system.
- Children under 12 years old must use an appropriate child restraint system.
- There are no vignettes; some roads and tunnels may have toll sections.
- Winter tires are not legally required, but they are recommended on mountain passes during winter.
- Since June 1, 2025, a 12-point penalty system has been in effect; traffic fines must be paid online (my.gov.uz, Road24), not directly to police officers. The speed limit is up to 30 km/h near schools and 20 km/h in residential areas.
- Cross-border travel is generally not permitted or requires prior approval.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Uzbekistan?
If your national driver’s license is issued in the Latin alphabet, it is usually sufficient together with your passport. If your license is issued in Cyrillic or another non-Latin alphabet, you will need an International Driving Permit (IDP) together with your national driver’s license.
What is the minimum age to rent a car?
Most rental companies rent cars to drivers aged 21 and over with at least one year of driving experience. Some companies rent to drivers aged 18–20 or charge a young driver surcharge for drivers under 25. Premium vehicle categories usually have stricter requirements.
Is a security deposit required?
Some cars on Localrent are available without a deposit, while local rental companies often require a deposit of USD 100–500 (or the equivalent in Uzbek som), depending on the vehicle category. The exact conditions are shown when selecting a specific car.
Where can I pick up and return the car?
The most common pickup locations are Tashkent Airport, as well as Samarkand, Bukhara, and other cities. Many rental companies also offer delivery to your hotel or the airport.
Can I drive to neighboring countries?
In most cases, rental companies do not allow cross-border travel or require prior approval during booking. If you plan to travel to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, or Tajikistan, check the conditions in advance.
Which insurance should I choose?
Basic insurance is included in the rental price. You can add extended coverage with zero excess, so you won’t have to pay for minor damage.
What is the fuel policy?
The standard policy is “full-to-full”: you receive the car with a full tank and return it with a full tank.
When is the best time to book?
Spring and autumn are the peak tourist seasons, and rental cars are booked quickly. If you plan to travel on the Tashkent–Samarkand–Bukhara route, it is recommended to book in advance.
