- Speed limits: 50 km/h in urban areas, 90 km/h on rural roads, 110 km/h on expressways, and 130 km/h on motorways.
- Speed cameras enforce limits without any tolerance—exceeding the limit by even 1 km/h is considered a violation.
- Low-beam headlights are mandatory at all times outside built-up areas.
- Zero alcohol tolerance applies: the legal blood alcohol limit is 0.00‰. Even one glass of wine means you must not drive.
- Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers, including those in the rear seats.
- Mobile phones may only be used with a hands-free system.
- Children under 150 cm in height must travel in an appropriate child restraint system in the rear seats.
- Winter tires are not mandatory, but studded tires are completely prohibited. Snow chains may be required on certain roads when indicated by road signs.
- An electronic motorway vignette (e-matrica) is required for driving on motorways (M1, M3, M5, M6, M7, and others). It can be purchased online or at fuel stations before entering a toll road. Driving without a valid vignette may result in a fine of approximately €56.
- Check that your rental car is equipped with a first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, warning triangle, and reflective safety vest.
- Police officers may collect traffic fines on the spot.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Hungary?
Hungary is a party to the Vienna Convention, so driver’s licenses issued in the Latin alphabet are generally accepted without an International Driving Permit. If your license is issued only in Cyrillic (for example, an older Russian license without Latin transliteration), an International Driving Permit (IDP) is required.
What is the minimum age to rent a car in Hungary?
Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old with a minimum of one year of driving experience. Drivers under 25–26 years old often pay a young driver surcharge, typically €3–5 per day. The exact conditions are shown when selecting a vehicle.
